Joseph married Anna Barbara Christ, daughter of Michael Christ and Julia Schnebelin, on Feb 12, 1900. (Anna Barbara Christ was born on Mar 20, 1881 in Mascoutah, St. Clair, Illinois, USA, died on Mar 18, 1967 and was buried in Mascoutah, St. Clair, Illinois, USA.)
Joseph & Annie lived on a farm north of the Mascoutah Cemetery. The address is now 1115 North County Road. Mary & Clara were born there and Joseph died there of double pneumonia at the age of 38 years. Mary was ten years old and Clara was five years old when he died. Annie and her two daughters went to live with her widowed mother, Julia Schnebelin-Christ at 626 West Church Street in Mascoutah. The girls were very unhappy living there. They lived to visit their Uncle Emil who was living alone on the eighty acres on Perrin Road. Emil really needed a housekeeper, so he invited them to live with him. Annie went to her mother for advice. She was concerned about what people would say. Her mother said: “People are going to talk anyway, so do what you want to do.” So they did go to live with him.
Emil’s father died in 1915 and his estate, which consisted mainly of his 136-acre farm, was to be divided equally between his heirs, namely: Henry, Emil, Edward, Hugo, Xavier, Mathilda, and the widow of Joseph Jr & her two minor daughters. Emil and Annie decided to get married and combine their inheritances and buy the remaining five shares of the farm.
