John married Karolina Paulina Hatt, daughter of Daniel Hatt and Karolina Jager, on Aug 30, 1870 in Mascoutah, St. Clair, Illinois, USA. (Karolina Paulina Hatt was born on Mar 11, 1850 in Ettenheim, , Baden-Württemberg, Germany, died on Jan 26, 1897 and was buried in Mascoutah, St. Clair, Illinois, USA.)
Joseph was eleven years old when he came to this country with his parents on July 26, 1859.
He married Korolina Hatt on August 30, 1870 in Holy Childhood Church.
They lived on the 136-acre farm in Mascoutah Township in 1880. Her sister Maria lived with them. They had two acres of apple trees and 1/8 acre of vineyards. The address is now 8866 Machine Shop Road. Joseph had inherited the farm from his father, who had instructed him to pay his brothers and sister specified amounts of money. When Karolina died at the age of forty-six, Maria took care of the children; Mathilda was only five years old.
“I recall my mother telling me that her dad made three trips to Germany before he convinced Karolina to join him. Her sister Mary came with them. She never married and assed away just before my Mom & Dad wee married. She died suddenly of a heart attack in the kitchen doorway. Mom hardly remembered her mother, but she felt the loss of her Aunt Mary deeply.”
