Peter attended school until he was 14 yrs old. Then began working with his father as a ferryman on the Mosel River.
As a result of the Neopolianic Wars the area where t he Kolbs' lived was economically troubled, especially since the several German states had not yet united.
Peter's mother died when he was six yrs old..
With some of the money he received from her estate( it seems his father, Gottfried must have been dead at this time) he traveled to the United States, in the spring of 1852.
He first went to Antwerp, from which port, he sailed for two months until he landed in New York City,NY. on 10 Apr 1852.
He went to Buffalo,NY and after a two or three week wait for the steamer" Michigan", he sailed on the Great Lakes for Green Bay,WI.
He went north to Peshtigo to work in the Paper mill, for four yrs. , which was owned by Edwin Meyer,Sr(Edwin Jr retired as chief executive,3 Mar 1993) . He spent the winter of that year in Meeme,WI where his sister,Gertrude, who had come to America a short time after him , was residing.
Peter filed a Declaration of Intent -4 Apr 1954.
It was there that he met ,Miss. Margaret Adolff. They were married on 31 Mar 1854 and lived in a house ( Peter built) on Main St. in Green Bay,WI.
Soon after this they sold their home and moved to Meeme,WI, where Peter spent the next six years clearing farmland.
In July of 1863, they moved to a farm in the DePere,WI twp ,where they spent the rest of their lives. Peter became a Postmaster in Brown County, a Post Office was named for him, near Kolbs Corners,south of DePere,WI
There were eight children.
