Eugene Peter Mayer, age 87, of Austin, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at t he Austin Medical Center. Eugene was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Stacyville, Io wa, to Arthur and Frances (Meyer) Mayer. On June 25, 1946, he was unit ed in marriage to Mary Ann Miller in Stacyville.
Eugene was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, American Legion a nd Queen of Angels Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his fami ly, was a devoted Twins fan, liked to play cards, work crossword puzzles a nd bowl. Eugene farmed south of Austin for 21 years. He then moved in to a home in northeast Austin, where he lived for 27 years before movi ng to the Cedars. He served in the United States Army during World W ar II and was a retired meat cutter for Hormel Foods.
Survivors include his wife: Mary Ann Mayer, Austin; three daughters: Lean ne (Tony) Peters, Plymouth; Elaine (Mike) Noble, Mantorville; Jean Melso n, Stoddard, Wis.; two sons: Jim (Nancy) Mayer, Singapore; Chuck (Cece) Ma yer, Mason City, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siste r: Magdalen (Leo) Thiele, Austin; brother: Robert (Darlene) Mayer, Stacyvi lle, Iowa; sister-in-law: Ruth Mayer, Stacyville, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Loren and Urban; a nd a sister: Mary Agnes Mayer.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, 200 3, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father John Traufler officiatin g. There will be a 7 p.m. KC Rosary on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home whe re friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also from noon-1 p.m. on Thursda y. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American L egion Post #91. The casket bearers will be Craig Peters, Andy Mayer, Er ic Noble, Tyler Melson, Ricky Whitcomb and Todd Wentworth.
Eugene married Mary Ann Miller.
