William "Bill" Mayer, age 81, of Riceville, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City. A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Riceville; the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Riceville, with military honors. Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, was in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born in rural McIntire to Paul and Anna (Meyer) Mayer on April 21, 1928. Bill was united in marriage to Marvel Roe in LeRoy, Minn., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on May 7, 1952.
Bill served during the Korean War. He farmed and worked as a mechanic for many years, including operating his own service station in Riceville. He also worked at the Riceville Community Schools prior to his retirement. Bill was an active member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, a fire fighter and ambulance driver. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, fishing, polka music, dancing and setting on the front porch. He was loved and will be missed dearly by all.
He is survived by his wife, Marvel (Roe) Mayer; children, Ron, Sheila (Duenow), Brad, Laurie (Hersleff), Gary Bahling, David and Maggie (Weber); 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathleen Hummel and Mary Shane, both of Riceville, Ruth Condon of New Haven; sister-in-law, Myrna Mayer of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him were his parents Paul and Anna; granddaughter, Darci; five brothers, Charlie, Leonard, Marvin, John and Donald; and two sisters, Joann and Gladys.
William married Marvel I. Roe.
